Creating Homes for Wildlife: Noonaweena's Hollow Log Initiative
At Noonaweena, sustainability is more than a commitment—it's a responsibility we proudly embrace every day. Nestled amongst 100 acres of beautiful Australian bush-land overlooking Yengo National Park, we understand that protecting the environment means caring not only for our guests but also for the incredible wildlife that calls this landscape home.
One of our newest conservation initiatives is the installation of artificial hollow homes throughout the property, providing safe nesting and shelter opportunities for native wildlife.
Why Hollow Homes Matter
Many of Australia's native birds, mammals and reptiles rely on natural tree hollows for shelter, breeding and protection from predators. Unfortunately, these hollows can take well over 100 years to form naturally in mature eucalyptus trees.
With increasing land clearing, bush-fires and the loss of older trees, suitable nesting hollows have become increasingly scarce, placing additional pressure on many native species.
By installing specially designed hollow homes, we're helping bridge this gap and creating new habitat where it is needed most.
Supporting Our Native Wildlife
These artificial hollows provide a safe refuge for a variety of local species that inhabit the Central Coast hinterland, including:
* Owls
* Kookaburras
* Rosellas
* Lorikeets
* Possums
* Sugar Gliders
* Microbats
* Native reptiles
Each hollow is carefully positioned to provide the best opportunity for wildlife to naturally adopt these new homes while minimizing disturbance to the surrounding environment.
Conservation in Action
Our Hollow Log Initiative forms part of Noonaweena's broader environmental commitment through our ongoing sustainability initiatives and dedication to protecting the surrounding natural environment.
Every conservation project, no matter how small, contributes to preserving biodiversity and ensuring future generations can continue to experience Australia's unique wildlife in its natural habitat.
By enhancing habitat across our property, we're actively supporting healthier ecosystems while complementing the surrounding wilderness of Yengo National Park.
How Our Guests Help Make a Difference
Every guest who stays at Noonaweena plays an important role in supporting our conservation efforts.
A portion of the revenue generated from accommodation, retreats and events is reinvested into environmental initiatives like our Hollow Log Wildlife Project, native habitat restoration and sustainable land management.
Guests also contribute by embracing responsible tourism during their stay. Whether it's staying on designated walking trails, respecting wildlife by observing from a distance, reducing water and energy use, recycling where possible, or simply taking the time to appreciate the natural environment, every small action helps protect this special place.
Together, we're creating a place where people can experience nature while ensuring it continues to thrive for generations to come.
Our 2026 Goal - Help Us Build 10 New Wildlife Homes
For 2026, Noonaweena has set an ambitious goal to install 10 new wildlife hollow homes throughout the property.
Each hollow home costs approximately $300 to construct and install, giving us a fundraising goal of $3,000 by the end of the year.
These homes will provide vital nesting and shelter opportunities for native birds, possums, gliders and other wildlife that depend on tree hollows to survive.
